Joseph John Mistro


Joseph John Mistro, age 76, of Schererville, IN and Fort Myers, FL passed away at his home on May 5th, 2014 surrounded by his family after an 18 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe was born on July 8, 1937 in Chicago, IL and grew up in the Pullman neighborhood. He married Janice "Sue" (Pelkey) Mistro on August 13, 1966 in LaSalle, IL after meeting at Northern Illinois University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Joe was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving four years in Hawaii and Guam. He retired from The Sherwin Williams Company as the Director of Operational Planning in 1992 after 26 years of service. After his retirement from Sherwin Williams, Joe worked for 20 years at Tuckaway Golf Course in Crete, IL. He also coached Dyer Girls' Softball for 10 years and started the PTO at Kahler Middle School in Dyer, IN, serving as its first President. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing with great friends at Tuckaway and at Heritage Palms in Fort Myers, FL. He was also a lifelong Cubs and Bears fan. Joe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in St. John, IN and greatly appreciated the support provided by the church, especially Deacon Joe, during his illness. Joe is survived by Sue, his loving wife of 48 years; daughters: Tracy (Scott) DeGrauwe of Schererville, IN and Julie (Mark) Springer of South Elgin, IL; grandchildren: Luke and Ty Jacobson, Haley, Hannah, and Hunter Springer, and Joshua and Tara DeGrauwe; sisters: Marie Lehner of Indianapolis, IN and Regina Mistro of Dyer, IN; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Virginia Mistro.
