Josephine "Jo" (Huber) Schweitzer

JOSEPHINE SCHWEITZER (NEE HUBER) LOWELL AND CROWN POINT, IN Josephine “Jo” Schweitzer (nee Huber), of Lowell and Crown Point, IN, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014. Jo leaves behind her devoted and loving husband of 57 years, Richard George; and her sister, Monica (Ray) Romain. She leaves her children: Rick (Jeri) Schweitzer of Lowell, IN, Mary Jo (Jeff) Lane of Cedar Lake, IN, Janine (John) Fitzgerald of Lowell, IN, and Mark (Marisa) Schweitzer of Crown Point, IN; her grandchildren: Vanessa (Aaron) Joppek, Valarie (Tony) Batuello, Michael and David Wiltshire, Kelly and Jonathon Fitzgerald, Brianna (Greg) Bernacchi and Adam Schweitzer and his fiancée Taylor Grede; her four great granddaughters, two great grandchildren on the way and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents: Charles W. and Josephine Huber; her brothers: Charles, Ralph and Jerome, and her sister, Barbara Hoffman. Jo graduated from St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point and Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond. She attended the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL and graduated from Valparaiso University. She also taught at St. Mary’s. She and her husband, Richard, established Superior Petroleum Products, Superior Fuels and Smart Stop Stores. Jo was junior class president at University of St. Francis. A longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, she served on the financial committee and was a Eucharist minister there and at Franciscan St. Anthony Health Hospital in Crown Point. She was past president of the Altar and Rosary, St. John Deanery and Secretary/Treasurer of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a charter member of the Crown Point Community Foundation, a member of Youche Country Club and a charter member of the Bishops Guild with the Diocese of Gary. Jo, with her father C. W. Huber and her brother Ralph Huber, together volunteered a combined 100 years of accounting service for St. Mary’s Cemetery in Crown Point. She was also a member of the funeral choir. Her family was her most cherished treasure. She enjoyed family gatherings, travel, reading and playing bridge and pinochle. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Geisen Funeral Home, 606 E. 113thAve./South St. Crown Point, IN and on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church 321 E. Joliet St. Crown Point, IN from 9:00 -10:00 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church with Father Pat Kalich officiating. Services will conclude at the Church, with private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary’s or the Crown Point Community Foundation.
