Raymond J. Balka, age 77, lifelong resident of East Chicago, went peacefully to the Lord on Friday, April, 30, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Ray passed away the day after celebrating his 49th wedding anniversary with his adoring wife, Lorraine. Also survived by loving children: Chad, Curtis (Margarita), and Kimberly (Edward) Jayjack; grandchildren: Andre, Hannah, and Madeline Balka, Kasia and Jocelyn Jayjack; loving brothers: Edmund (Sue) Balka and Richard (Norbie) Balka; sister, Theresa Revere; sisters-in-law: Rosemary Balka and Dorothy Wisniewski; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand-dog Remy. Preceded in death by parents: Josef and Kazimiera; brothers: Joseph, Walter, Edward, John, Stanley, Marion Balka, and Stanley Wisniewski; sister, Jenny Obolewicz; and best friends: Jack and Mary Woolf. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Margaret Mary Church, 1445 Hoffman St., Hammond with Rev. James W. Schulz officiating. Mr. Balka will lie in state at the church from 9:30 AM until time of service. At rest St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave. (corner of Main and Kennedy), Schererville. Ray was an East Chicago Police Officer, a United States Federal Marshall and a United States Marine who served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Allied Post 369, who will post colors at the funeral home on Sunday at 5:00 PM. Raymond will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose lifelong passion was family. Ray was also an avid fisherman and was loved and admired by many.
