Spiro George Cappony


Spiro George Cappony, age 89, recently of Reno, NV, formerly a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2012 in Reno. He was born in Gary, IN. Spiro was a dedicated gentleman serving his Greek Orthodox Church, his country and his family faithfully. Spiro began as an altar boy and became a member of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church Council in 1956, serving throughout the years as president, chairman of many festivals, and the building committee during the construction of the Cathedral in Merrillville. He was the recipient of the Medal of St. Paul, the recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Spiro was a devoted member of the Order of Ahepa, Gary Chapter #78 where he served as Past President, Past District Secretary, Ahepa Housing for the Elderly, and Project Coordinator of the local Ahepa housing village located in Merrillville. He was the recipient of the Ahepan of the Year, District 12, Life member of the Disabled American Veterans and Office of Strategic Services, recipient of the Bronze Star Medal (served behind enemy lines in Northern Greece in 1944), and U.S Naval Reserve Specialist. Spiro's service record was recorded in the Library of Congress and on the Congressional Record for work with the Ahepa and received the 29th Deputy Secretary of Defense Medal. He worked for U. S. Steel and retired from the Pangere Corporation as Manager of Public Relations. Spiro was preceded in death by his parents: George and Stavroula Cappony; and sister, Christina Argeroudis. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sister, Kiki Cappony; two sons: George (Sharon) Cappony and Nicholas (Linda) Cappony; two daughters: Estelle Cappony and Antonia (Harold) Peskin; two grandsons: George (Sandy) Cappony and Matthew Peskin; one granddaughter, Kara (Charles) Hargis; two great grandsons: George Cappony and Tyler Hargis; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 2:00-8:00 PM at the Geisen Funeral and Cremation Services, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN 46410. A Trisagion prayer service will be offered Thursday at 5:00 PM, followed by the Order of Ahepa service. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison Street, Merrillville, IN 46410 with Rev. Theodore Poteres officiating. Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, IN.
