Charles Monroe Blanchard, 84, of Michigan City, IN, passed away in his sleep on August 28, 2013 while in hospice care at Franciscan Communities Hospice in Michigan City. Charles was born in Hammond, IN on January 12, 1929 to Herbert and Ola Blanchard. He attended Hammond Tech, Hammond, IN. While working for NIPSCO, he met his soon to be wife, Betty. Charles then faithfully served his country in KOREA as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force before returning home and beginning an apprenticeship. He worked in Northern Indiana as a machinist, tool and die maker. Charles enjoyed competitive archery and camping with his family, pinochle and driving vacations. "Charlie", as many knew him, was married on May 14, 1949 to Betty LaVerne Scamihorn. They were married 61 years and raised their five children in Munster, IN. He is survived by two daughters: Pamela Slusher and Patricia (Moses) Pagan; three sons, Kenneth (Mary) Blanchard, Kevin (Susie) Blanchard, and Kell (Jackie) Blanchard; four grandchildren: Kenneth Jr. (Mariah) Blanchard, William (Ali) Blanchard, Ryan Blanchard, and Ali Blanchard; five great grandchildren: Benjamin, Abigail, Elija, Emily, and Anabel; his last surviving sibling, Mary (Bill) Zea; and sister-in-law, Marianne Blanchard. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; grandson, Jerome Charles Slusher; son-in-law, Joe Tom Slusher; brothers: James (Shirley) Blanchard, Clifford (Loretta) Blanchard, and Donald Blanchard; and sister, Catherine (Woody) Greene. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held in his honor from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at The DAV Chapter 23 (Disabled American Veterans), 2301 Ohio Street, Michigan City, IN. Cremation took place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 cared for the cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the , the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or the Disabled American Veterans in memory of Charles M. Blanchard.
