George Joseph Nehl, 89, of Union Mills, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013 at home. He was born February 13, 1923 in LaPorte to Roy and Serena (Smith) Nehl. On September 27, 1947 in Pinhook, he married Gladys Thompson who survives. Also surviving George are his sons: Roy Joseph (Cindy) Nehl of Russiaville, IN, Donald Robert (Susie) Nehl and Joseph George (Elizabeth) Nehl both Union Mills; eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Swanson of LaPorte. George was proud to be a World War II Army veteran serving at the Battle of the Bulge and receiving a Purple Heart for injuries suffered during the war. Served as rifleman and as leader of rifle squad with 319th Infantry, 80th Division, in France, Luxembourg and Germany. He was a member of the Skwiat American Legion Post #451 in Michigan City and a member of the Jolly Boys also. George was a retired machinist from Indiana General in Valparaiso and was also a lifelong area farmer. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 PM Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Union Mills Cemetery. Legion Chaplain Ted Yagelski will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Newhard Funeral Home, 58 W. Walnut St. in Westville followed by procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Porter County VNA Hospice or the Skwiat American Legion Post #451. Please feel free to sign our online guestbook at
