George L. Winiecki, 83, of Kankakee, IL passed away on February 23, 2014 at Manor Care Nursing Home of Kankakee, IL After a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on November 12, 1930 in Chicago IL, the son of Chester and Virginia (Jekubczak) Winiecki. George married Helen Czarnecki on January 21, 1956. She survives. He is also survived by one sister and brother- in-law, Margaret and Robert Cepko; two sisters-in-law: Betty Winiecki and Nancy Swallow; sons: Donald (Deborah) Winiecki and Phillip (Julia) Winiecki; three grandchildren: Fiona (Richard) Winiecki, Colin (Jeanna) Winiecki, and Coleen (Itay) Yarden; and three great grandchildren: Victoria, Aurora, and Olivia. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Patrick and Richard; and his parents. George served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Corporal, seeing active combat in the Korean War and served eight years in the Reserves. He worked at Republic Steel and the Calumet Regional Credit Union for over 30 years while living in Highland, IN. Upon retiring, he moved to Jones, MI to pursue his love of fishing before settling in Kankakee. Visitation will be held at Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 3:00-8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Highland, IN at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014.
