James Miller Buchanan, 81, on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 3:30a.m., surrounded by family, passed peacefully into the arms of his heavenly father in the comfort of his own home. James, known as Buck to friends and family, was born on May 3, 1931 in Herrin, IL to Harold and Mabel Buchanan. Preceded in death by his brother, Richard Buchanan. He graduated from University of Illinois with a business degree. He served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant. He was a home builder, developer and owner of Standard Lumber Company in St. John. Buck is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Corene; and his children: James Buchanan (Mary), Linda Smith (Brent), and Richard Buchanan (Angella). He was the proud grandfather of Lindsey Smith Wagner (Robert), Kyle Smith, Courtney Smith Neal (Michael), Brent Jr. Smith, Christine Buchanan, James Buchanan, Hunter Buchanan and Lauren Buchanan; and great grandfather to Kathryn Wagner. He will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors, especially the time he spent on his farm. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Other interests included golfing, painting, and watching the Chicago Bears. He was an avid fan rarely missing a game. His love for his fellow man was demonstrated by his years of leadership and service, as past president of Hammond Rotary and district governor of Rotary International. He was a long time member of Ridge United Methodist Church, Briar Ridge Country Club, and Woodmar Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Ridge United Methodist Church at 8707 Columbia Avenue Munster, IN 46321 (219)838-4770. The memorial service will begin at noon.
