John J. Balczo, age 76 of Hammond, formerly East Chicago, passed away Sunday September 1, 2013 He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Janet. He was a loving father to four sons: Kenneth (Pamela), Robert (Cheryl), James (Katherine), and Thomas (Tammy); and a loving grandfather to Amy, Robin, Andrew, Hunter, Kevin; great grandfather of two; one brother, Richard (Rose) Balczo; many sisters and brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; uncle, Andy (Clare) Thomas; and aunt, Margaret Boilek. Preceded in death by his parents: John and Ann Balczo; and two brothers: Robert and Eugene. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, 2013 at 10:30 AM. Mass DIRECTLY at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Ave., Hammond, IN with Fr. Charles A. Mosley officiating. John will lie in state at the church from 10:00 AM until time of Mass. Burial will be private. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville, IN (Corner Main and Kennedy). 3:00 PM wake service. John was a Lifelong area resident. He was a member OLPH Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Council #1700. John was a U.S. Army veteran and was Chaplain with American Legion Post #369 who will post colors at 6:00 PM.
