John "Jack" Matthew Biel, 77, of Harvest, AL passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014 peacefully at his residence. Formerly of Whiting, Indiana, Mr. Biel graduated from St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Whiting High School, and earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and was a very active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in Whiting. He was president of the Marian Theatre Guild and served on his Parish Council, in various capacities, for over 20 years. Mr. Biel was a member of his parish school board, was president of the PTA, and coached both football and basketball teams. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Biel was a Distinguished Life Member of the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) where he served on multiple committees including the Board of Governors, with one term as President (1982-1984). He also was president of the Whiting - Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce for an unprecedented five terms. After his 35 year career in the Die Cast Industry, Mr. Biel retired with his wife in Harvest, AL in 2007. Jack is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lucy Einhorn Biel; his children: Robert "Bob" (Pati) Biel of Hoboken, NJ, John "Jack" (Michelle) Biel of New Lenox, IL Timothy "Tim" (Allison) Biel of Larkspur, CA, and Bridget Biel of Huntsville, AL; son-in-law, Todd Freestone of Madison, AL; two sisters: Carole Mullins of Lemont, IL and Nancy Fechalos of Aurora, IL; eight grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends. Mr. Biel was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Freestone; infant son, John Matthew Biel; brother, Don Biel; and parents: John and Susan Biel. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison, AL at 11:00 AM with Father Philip O'Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow at Madison Memory Gardens in Madison, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of Jack Biel to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Wounded Warriors Program.
