Joseph H. Bell, a resident of Ogden Dunes, IN passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, IN. He was a veteran actor, director, playwright, teacher and dedicated husband and father. In the 1950s and '60s, Mr. Bell appeared on the New York stage, most notably acting on Broadway in Neil Simon's original production of "Come Blow Your Horn." Bell, a member of Actor's Equity, performed and directed in many Chicagoland theaters including The Goodman Theatre, Second City, Ravinia, Drury Lane and The Peninsula Players. The youngest of five children, Mr. Bell was born on August 29, 1932 in Malden, MA to Florence Margolis and Aaron Bell, an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi who, with his wife, immigrated to the US from Ukraine in 1918. He grew up in California, hitchhiking to New York City at age 18 to follow his dream. Mr. Bell eventually moved to Chicago where he earned a Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. He went on to teach at several institutions including Kelly and Calumet High Schools and colleges in Illinois and Indiana. In 1992 Bell met the love of his life, Jean Martin. They married in 2001 and together enjoyed music, theatre, travel and family gatherings. He is survived by his wife, Jean; children: Sean and Heather Bell; stepchildren: Tom, Phil, Dominique, Noel and Tim Frigo, Pam Johnson and Lisa Kuegler; 21 grandchildren; his brother, Harold Bell; and his first wife, Hope Hommersand. A memorial celebration of life is planned for Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 AM at the Ogden Dunes Community Church in Ogden Dunes, IN.
