LAVERGNE "SPEED" NIEQUIST LaVergne "Speed" Niequist, 87, died peacefully November 1, 2012, at Sterling House of Valparaiso. She touched the lives of many and will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was born March 1, 1925, in Chicago, the daughter of Maynard G. and Anna (Slavicek) Niequist. She is survived by nieces: Pamela Wehbi of Lynn, MA and Nancy Schoon of Gary; grandnephews: Alan Wehbi of Villa Park, IL, Khalil Wehbi and Kevin Schoon of Chicago; and longtime friend, Joan Miller of Valparaiso. Her brother, Maynard; and sister, Marilyn preceded her in death. LaVergne graduated from Valparaiso High School and Indiana University with a degree in journalism. She paid her way through college as a professional softball player for the famous women's leagues of the 1940s, as remembered in the film A League of Their Own. For 32 years, LaVergne worked for Laidlaw Brothers Publishing in River Forest, IL, as a textbook editor and later as Production Director. Following a family graveside service, LaVergne was laid to rest next to her sister, Marilyn, at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso. Memorials in her name may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church of Valparaiso. The Bartholomew Funeral Home in Valparaiso was in charge of arrangements.
