Richard D. Schroeder, age 76, of Michigan City, IN passed away on December 30, 2013 holding hands with his wife, Kathy. Rich was born the first child of Ben and Wanda in the upstairs of his grandparents’ house in Three Oaks, MI. He was so small he was placed in a shoe box on the oven door until he began to grow bigger. He was taught to work at a very young age and never quit. Rich graduated from Three Oaks High School where he belonged to FFA and Glee Club. He still had friends from high school today. Rich went into the Marine Corps. With his friend Tim and spent part of his time in Hawaii working on helicopters. Rich moved back to Three Oaks, MI and married his class mate Mary Jo whom he had five children with. Their marriage did not last, but he stayed very close to his children, teaching them about nature and the values of life. Rich worked at Midwest Steel in Portage for 35 years, having to retire because of rheumatoid arthritis. He met Kathy Nessler nearly 28 years ago, and they quickly became two peas in a very small pod. No two people were closer. Rich belonged to Midwest Steel Retirees Club, The Senior Center of Michigan City, The Wanders Motorcycle Club, and ABATE of IN and NRA. Rich is survived by his wife, Kathy; children: Brian, Rita, Rick, and Paul Schroeder; grandchildren: Samantha, Coleman, Braxton, and Brody; and best dog ever, Stella. Rich loved life to the fullest and was planning a summer trip in his 5th wheel to visit Alaska with Kathy and their friends Emil and Lora. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son named John. He will be missed by his family and very large circle of friends. Rich had such a great memory, friendly nature, and could fix darn near anything. He built so many buildings without even a blue print. He was a remarkable man.
