Verona A. (Brockman) Palmateer, age 93, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Meridian Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, IL. She had been a longtime resident of Hammond. Verona is survived by her daughter, Karen (Palmateer) Veith; son-in-law, Pastor William H. Veith of Alton, IL; and two grandsons: Nathan Veith of Denver, CO and Jonathan Veith of Bloomington, IN. Verona was born in Mount Olive, IL on January 7, 1920. She graduated from Mount Olive High School in 1938 and then completed training as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City, IL in 1941. She enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served during WWII for two years as a nurse at the Navy Hospital in San Diego, CA. Following her military discharge and marriage to Harry Palmateer in 1944, they resided in Hammond for the 64 years of their marriage. Verona worked for 30 years as a registered nurse in several hospitals and physicians; offices in Northwest Indiana before retiring. She was an active member of Hyde Park Methodist Church for many years, and in later life belonged to Woodmar Methodist Church in Hammond. Verona was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Palmateer, who passed away in July of 2009; her parents: William and Abbie (Ivers) Brockman of Mount Olive, IL; and one sister, Lucille (Brockman) Small. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, with Rev. Alex Stone officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Woodmar Methodist Church in Hammond.
