EARL ASHCRAFT "DEAN" Earl "Dean" Ashcraft, age 77, passed away in Dewey, OK from complications of a long-term illness Friday, August 17, 2012. Dean was born in St. John, IN to Elmer Cecil Ashcraft and Mary Gladys Marvel Ashcraft on June 10, 1935. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Judith Ambrose-Ashcraft of Merrillville, IN; one sister, Diane Richied of Plainfield, IL; one brother, Glenn (Jake) and Evelyn Ashcraft of South Haven, IN; six sons: William Ashcraft and Sabine Miller of Aurora, IL, Daniel and Karen Ashcraft of Dewey, OK, Dale Ashcraft and Vicki Henry of Oak Island, NC, Gregory and Deborah Ashcraft of Lake Station, IN, David and Cheri Ashcraft of Goshen, IN, and Bradley Howell of Lafayette IN; one daughter, Natalie and Bruce Bartlett, of Orleans, MA; 11 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer Cecil and Mary Gladys Ashcraft, and siblings: Jack Ashcraft, Shirley Gustofson, Ronnie Ashcraft, Carl Ashcraft, Jerry Ashcraft and Marilee Coburger. Funeral services will be held at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave. in St. John on Friday August 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Burial Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schererville. Friends may meet with the family on Thursday at the funeral home from 4:30 -7:00 p.m. Dean attended Dyer High School, then after an honorable tour in the Army he settled back into Lake County, IN until well after his retirement. Dean retired from the Union Pacific Railroad, rising from clerk to Senior Claim Agent for the Midwest Region. Well known in the NW Indiana amateur golf community, Dean was a frequent contender for the Hammond Times and Lake-Porter Amateur titles.
