James E. Dowling, age 88, of St. John, formerly of Hammond, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at home with his wife Lillian and loving family at his side. James was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lillian; two daughters: Pat (David) Kohanyi of Schererville and Kathy (Steve) Ignas of Crown Point, IN; four sons: Jim (Becky) Dowling of Schererville, Don Dowling of Lowell, Dan (Patty) Dowling of St. John, and David (Katy) Dowling of St. John; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and brother, Edward (Roberta) Dowling of Escondido, CA. James was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Opal Dowling; brothers: William and Robert Dowling; sister, Theresa Bakker; daughter-in-law, Debbie Dowling. James attended and graduated from Hammond Morton and Hammond Tech High School. He was an accomplished man who served his country and community. During World War II, he was an Army Air Force Cadet. After the war, Mr. Dowling worked briefly for the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. James was a Hammond Police Officer for 22 years, serving all ranks, including Chief of Police. While working for the City of Hammond Police Department, his training included the FBI National Academy and the Northwestern University Traffic Institute. Mr. Dowling also served for 20 years as Manager of Personnel and Security at Union Tank Car Company in East Chicago, IN. James was also a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local 150. Mr. Dowling was also a retired military officer, having served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. Later in life, James was elected to the Hammond City Council, District 6, once again serving his hometown. James was a member of Saint Matthias Catholic Church in Crown Point and a member of Hammond FOP Lodge 51. He was formerly a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, both located in Hessville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mathias Catholic Church (101 W. Burrell Drive, Crown Point, IN 46375) or The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (Division of Development, 901 E Street, NW, Suite 100, Washington DC, 20004-2025). Visitation will be held at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave (Route 41) in St. John on Friday, February 22, 2013 from 2:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 DIRECTLY at St. Matthias Church, 101 W Burrell Drive in Crown Point with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial at Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
