MONA JEAN GRAVES 1/4/1929-3/3/2014
Mona J. Graves, age 85, passed away March 3, 2014 after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. The treasured daughter of Bruce and Hazel Holstein she was raised in South Charleston, WV where she fell in love with her late husband, Orin Graves. She was also preceded in death by her son, Mark Graves. As a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend Mona’s life was centered on home life, family and friends. She was also a career woman while raising her family. She worked at Indiana University Northwest for over 30 years, and had been enjoying retirement for several years before she passed away. Mona was a talented artist, bird watcher, and animal lover. Her paintings have caught the eye of art critics, and adorn the homes of many family and friends, and art buyers as well. Her love of animals was renowned among all that knew her. “She would take strays in and give them a home, especially cats and dogs,” said her son, Mike. She also had a very kind heart to those animals in the family that were sick, and would help nurse them back to good health. Mona also was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for many occasions. “Some of the best recipes I have used for the holidays were from Mona,” said her daughter-in-law Laura. She is survived by her son, Mike and his wife Laura, of Valparaiso, IN; her daughter, Sally Szpakowski and her husband, Jim, of Sugar Land TX; her granddaughters; Sarah (Graves) Smithson and her husband, Nick of Cassville, MO; and Jennifer Graves of Phoenix, AR. Her grandsons; Sean Graves, and his wife, Alicia, of Valparaiso, IN and Eric Graves of Valparaiso, IN, David Szpakowski and Timothy Szpakowski of San Marcos, TX. Mona was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Nicarah Smithson, Kyan Graves, Alexis Farnum, and Roury Farnum. No words can express how much all of us will miss her. Visitation with a memorial service will be held Friday, March 14, 3:00PM-5:00PM for visitation, with the memorial service immediately following at 5:00PM, at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd.
