William "Bill" E. Morthland, age 87, passed away Wednesday May 7, 2014 at IU Healthcare in Bedford. He was born on May 27, 1926 in Valparaiso, Indiana to William and Faye Morthland. He married Hazel Green of Brazil on February 19, 2006. Although he graduated from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music, he spent most of his life as an insurance adjuster and property damage specialist. Music, however, was his job, and he spent much of his free time playing clarinet and saxophone in community bands and singing in church. He was active in the Brazil community being involved in both Rotary and Optimist Clubs. He served as Clay County Auditor from 1998-2002. He was also active in the community theatre. Bill served his country in the United States navy during the end of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Morthland; a sister, Marie Biggs and his first wife of 58 years, Roberta Gasaway. Survivors include: wife, Hazel; son, David (Angie) Morthland; daughter, Sue (Jim) Lakin; grandchildren: Amanda Warford, Maggie Timan, Dorothy Timan, Eric Cox, Chris Morthland, and Aaron Butcher; great grandson, Riley Cox. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with Pastor Steve Loft officiating and burial to follow at Clearview Cemetery where military honors will be performed. The family will accept friends from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brazil Rotary Club.
