Floyd R. Johnson, 91, of Kouts, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014. He was born July 29, 1922 in Hebron to John G. and Anna J. (Wilson) Johnson. Floyd graduated from Hebron High School in 1940. He tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He then went on to serve three years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sheridan in the South Pacific during WWII. Floyd received his bachelor's degree in education from Ball State University and his master's degree from Indiana University. He began his teaching career in Williams, IN, then Cayuga, IN. From 1954 to 1963, he taught business and coached in Kouts, then served as Principal at Wheeler for one year. From 1964 until his retirement in 1982, Floyd taught business and was Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Portage High School. He believed firmly in the value of a public education and in retirement, he continued to serve on the Kouts High School Memorial Scholarship Committee. Floyd was a member of the Kouts Presbyterian Church and the Kouts American Legion Post 301. On April 12, 1946 in Crown Point, he married Velda Seramur, who preceded him in death March 28, 2011. Floyd is survived by two nephews: Tom (Beth) Moran of Surprise, AZ and Doug (Cathy) Moran of Flowery Branch, GA; two nieces: Susan Ashworth of Ballground, GA and Sandy (Joe) Damouth of Cedar Lake, IN; a sister-in-law, Mary Seramur of Cedar Lake, IN; other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews; special cousins: Mary and Ron Jones; and many dear friends and neighbors who filled his life with joy. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Phillis Aplin and Claribel Moran. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Kosanke Funeral Home, Kouts. Burial at Salem Cemetery, Hebron. Visitation Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Floyd and Velda Johnson Scholarship Fund at Kouts High School or to the VNA Phoenix Center. KosankeFuneralHome.com
