BRENFORD EDWARD SERGENT PORTAGE, IN Brenford Edward Sergent, age 92, of Portage, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014. He was born on December 2, 1921 in Birch River, West Virginia to the late Lew and Caroline Sergent. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sgt. from 1942 to 1945 and received a certificate for his outstanding acts of merit against the enemy in France. Brent worked for Rockwell International in Gary and retired in 1978 after 28 years of service. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Betty (Mike Knox) Sergent of Chesterton, IN; two grandchildren, Lauren Faye Sergent of Chesterton, IN, and Brenford E. Sergent, III of Chesterton, IN; and special friend, Betty Parrigan of Portage, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Evelyn Sergent (nee Barker), son, Brenford Sergent, II, infant daughter, Carolyn Sergent, four brothers, Eugene, Walter, William "Billy", Artenis, and three sisters, Gladys Sergent, Audrey Hinkle, and Violet Fowler. The family would like to thank the VNA Hospice of Porter County for their kindness and compassion. Memorial donations in Brent's honor may be made to the Portage Missionary Baptist Church or the VNA Hospice of Porter County. Visitation is Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 11 am to 2 pm with a funeral service to follow at 2 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage with Rev.
