MARGARET MARY ENGLE (NEE O'DEA) "The Avon Lady" ST. JOHN, IN
Margaret Mary Engle (neé O'Dea), age 89, passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She will be greatly missed by her children: Elaine Bielefeld of Lowell, IN; Robert Engle, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV; David (Maggie) Engle of Cañon City, CO; Dan (Bonnie) Engle of Dyer, IN; Donna (Bill) McCabe of Crown Point, IN; Connie (late Manny) Navarro of Schererville, IN; Annette M. Engle of Fishers, IN; and Jeanne Engle of St. John, IN; 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; sisters Theresa (late Jack) Mang of Port Charlotte, FL; Mary (late John) Leathers of Cedar Lake, IN; and Kathleen (Candido) Mendoza of Country Club Hills, IL; brothers Joseph (Elaine) O'Dea of Cedar Lake, IN and Peter Sypult of Country Club Hills, IL; sister-in-law Roberta (late Frank) O'Dea of Highland, IN and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Robert, Sr.; granddaughter, Lisa Folger; grandson, Frankie Walker-DeSpain; brother, Frank O'Dea; and son-in-law, Manny Navarro. Born July 9, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, she moved with her family to Cedar Lake at the age of 9. She graduated from Dyer High School and worked in sales for Sears in Chicago Heights and her father's furniture store in Cedar Lake. She married Robert, Sr. on August 24, 1946, settling on the Engle family homestead where they raised their 8 children. Margaret was best known as "the Avon Lady", and was one of the top sellers in her district for nearly 40 years. Her dedication to her customers earned her the level of Team Leader and annual Rose Circle and President's Club member. Her creative talents were evidenced by her inspired product displays for the company district meetings. Margaret was also a charter member of VFW Post 717 in St. John and a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Cedar Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 11000 W. 133rd Ave., Cedar Lake, IN. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. A prayer service for family and close friends will be held at Burdan Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. A celebration of Margaret's life will begin at Burdan Funeral Home, 12901 Wicker Ave, Cedar Lake, IN with visitation Monday, August 4, 2014 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm, with a prayer service held by the VFW Post 717 at 7:00 pm.
