PENNY J. THON FORMERLY OF MUNSTER, IN
Penny Jo Thon, age 58, of Manitowoc, WI, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer. Penny was born on March 2, 1950 in Hammond, IN, daughter of the late Lloyd and Mildred (Maddox) Ahlf. She graduated from Hammond High School, Class of 1968. Penny received her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1972 from Purdue University. During her early working years, she furthered her education and earned her Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University. On November 22, 1981 Penny Ahlf married John Thon in Munster, IN. They lived in Munster, having all three of their children there, before moving to Manitowoc in 1988. Once in the Manitowoc area, she was involved in the Junior Service League and the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble. Penny also taught in the Two Rivers Public School District, ending her career in March of 2006 as a second grade teacher at Magee Grade School. She enjoyed gardening, outdoor activities, skiing and traveling out west, going on family vacations to various places, being an educator, and especially spending time with her family. She was always the #1 supporter for all of her daughters, never missing an event. Penny is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, John of Manitowoc, WI; three daughters: Kari (fiance Matthew McClenahan) of Minneapolis, MN, Kelly of Milwaukee, WI and Lauren of Manitowoc, WI; her siblings and their spouses: Betty Andrews of Fort Wayne, IN, Roger and Jo Ahlf of Munster, IN, Julie and Skip Pence of Green Valley, AZ and Robert and Lara Ahlf of Munster, IN; one sister-in-law, Sharon Thon of Israel; one brother-in-law, Bill (Sue) Thon of Griffith, IN; and her special dog, "Cooper". She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Penny was preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws. The memorial service for Penny will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Hope Church on Highway 310. Officiating at the service will be Revs. Rick Hein and Brian Aulick. Cremation has taken place and a luncheon will follow the service at the church. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Hope Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:30 a.m. The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, WI assisted the Thon family with funeral arrangements. Memorials are appreciated to the of Manitowoc and Hope Church, Manitowoc in Penny's name. The family would like to thank the Holy Family Cancer Care Center, Manitowoc for the care given to Penny, Hope Church and its Cancer Support Group for being with her in this journey, and the Two Rivers Public School District for their support. Penny was a wonderful wife, mom, sister, and friend, and will be missed by everyone that knew her.
