Robert Downs, age 56 of Hammond, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Maryann (nee Wartsbaugh); three children: Glenn (Renee) Downs, William Downs and Melissa Downs; one grandson, Devin; three sisters: Rosemary Johnson, Irene Orbin and Diane (Dennis) Davis; four brothers: Bruce (Patty) Downs, John Downs, Frank Downs and Daniel (Maureen) Downs; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents: William and Bernice; and brother, Mike. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at the Anthony & Dziadowicz Funeral Home, 4404 Cameron Ave., Hammond, IN (two blocks east of Hohman, one block north of Gostlin) for a 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Casimir Church with Rev. William O'Toole officiating. Burial at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Visitation Monday, May 17, 2010 from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Robert was a manager at Radio Shack with 12 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Hammond Victory Post 168 (services Monday 7:30 p.m.). Robert was an Army dependant who lived in several states and Germany during his young life. He enlisted in the Marine Corps from 1971 until 1984 where he served as a Gunnery Sgt. Robert worked for the U.S. Government for a short period after his discharge of military service. He married Maryann in July of 1989 and became an active member of the Hammond community for the past 21 years.
