LEONA L. JAMES GRIFFITH, IN Leona L. James (nee Brown), age 97 of Griffith, went to be with her Lord on July 19, 2010. She is survived by two daughters: Robin (Fred) Perry of Sanibel, FL and Carole James of Griffith; three grandchildren: Chris (Nancy Chen) Perry of Chicago, IL, David (Cris Kimbrough) Perry of Germantown, NY and Sara Perry of Seattle, WA; three great grandchildren: Nora and Graydon Kimbrough-Perry of Germantown, NY and Jay Min Perry of Chicago, IL; five much loved pets: Mandy, Muffy, Scooter, Willow and Twinkle. Leona was preceded in death by her parents: Arthur and Leah Brown; brother, Raymond Brown; sister, Bernita Brown; dear friend, Katherine Walter; and beloved pets: Morrie, Misty and Midnight. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Griffith Lutheran Church, 1000 N. Broad Street, Griffith, IN with Pastor Andrew Bailey officiating. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, July 22, 2010 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road), Highland, IN. Leona attended East Chicago Washington High School and East Chicago Business College. She was the owner of The Griffith Advertising Agency and Publisher of the Griffith Shopper for 34 years. She was one of the first women to own her own business and won many national and local awards, among them the First Place Community Service Award from the National Association of Advertising Publishers. She planned and built her house in Griffith and made a College Education possible for her daughters. Leona was a member of the Griffith Lutheran Church. She was publisher of the Church Newsletter and church secretary for seven years. She was also a choir member and active in Ladies Aid. Leona was a Girl Scout Leader, a generous contributor and volunteer for the Salvation Army and a retired member of Pi Sigma Phi Sorority. Her hobbies included ceramics, gardening, cooking and flower arranging. She was an avid Cubs Fan. She loved to dance and won many dancing awards. Leona was a wonderful caring and loving Mom, Gram and Great Gram, very much loved by her family and friends. She was a true loyal and caring friend to so many people. Leona did so much to encourage and help others. What a wonderful example she has been to all of us, of what it means to love your neighbor. We will miss her so much. She will remain in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Griffith Lutheran Church, The of Indiana, The Salvation Army - Munster Branch, The Southwest Indian Children's Fund, or the Humane Society-Calumet Area.
