GEORGE PORUMB, SR. MICHIGAN CITY, IN

George J. Porumb, Sr., age 61, of Michigan City, IN, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Porter Hospital, Portage Campus, Portage, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City with his brother-in-law, Roger Alford officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Stanislaus Mausoleum, Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00-8:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. Full military services will be conducted Friday at St. Stanislaus Cemetery by the VFW Post 2536 and American Legion Skwiat Post 451. George was born April 26, 1949 in Binghamton, NY to the late George J. and Lois (Melcher) Porumb. On June 24, 1984 in Carson City, NV he married Mary Ann Topolski Granzo, who preceded him in death on May 4, 2005. Surviving are four daughters: Kimberly (Jason) Fikes of Jasper, AL, Kimberly (Dave) Bays, Michelle Granzo, and Stacy Granzo all of Michigan City; son, George J. (Kelly) Porumb, Jr. of Moline, IL; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Sherman (Phyllis) Wilcox of NM; sisters, Debby (Larry) Brownfield of Indiana, Pattee Porumb and Denise Thomas, both of Kansas; He was preceded in death by son, Timothy Granzo; and sister, Octavia Ham. George was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also served on the Veterans Memorial Committee in Chesterton, and was a life member of the VFW Post, Hobart, IN. George had worked for the past 38 years at Mittal Steel, Burns Harbor as an operator for the air, gas, and water treatment center. Mr. Porumb enjoyed world traveling, golfing, his coffee buddies at Lindo's Restaurant and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
