ALVIN L. BARBER VALPARAISO, IN Alvin L. Barber, 85, a lifetime resident of Valparaiso passed away Thursday August 4, 2011 at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso. He was born on September 14, 1925 in Valparaiso to Oliver and Rose (Pletcher) Barber Spohn. Alvin was a 1943 graduate of Washington Township High School and volunteered for the Navy. He finished his submarine training and was honorably discharged due to the end of hostilities. He worked for NIPSCO for nine years and then moved on to Erwin's Appliance and continued to work there after it was bought by the Rouch family for a total of 45 years until he retired. Alvin was a member of Calvary Church in Valparaiso since its founding in 1947 he served as deacon, treasurer, youth leader, financial officer and Sunday school teacher. He also gave to the community through, blood service, donating 29 gallons over the years. Alvin enjoyed: fishing, sporting events such as baseball and basketball, and traveling. On August 27, 1945 in Valparaiso Alvin married Donnabelle Nelson who survives along with their children: Peggy Barber of Valparaiso, Jeff (Paula) Barber of Largo, FL and Amy (Kraig) Nuttall of Kernersville, NC; one sister, Mary Yager of Kouts; four grandchildren: Amanda and Alicia Nuttall, Cameron O'Connor, and Travis Haddock. A funeral service is planned for Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Calvary Church, 1325 E. Evans, Valparaiso, IN with Pastor Clay Nuttall officiating. Burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael J.
