I grew up at 236 Mason Street. For many years, I stood on the corner of Mason and Wentworth waiting for the bus to go to work in Chicago. While waiting there in the early morning hours I would often see Joe and Mary doing the yard work that kept the lawn on their corner lot the envy of their neighbors and, arguably, the entire city! The verdant expanse that wrapped around their immaculate home was a luxurious carpet of weed-free green.
I would often engage Joe in conversation about how he was able to keep his lawn so tidy and he would just laugh and say all it takes is a bag of fertilizer and a strong back! On his own initiative, Joe would even repair the sidewalks in front of his house, never waiting for the city to finally get around to doing it. Now THAT is the kind of self-reliant attitude that is sorely lacking in our country these days. (And I often told Joe the very same thing, and received a nod and a wry smile in return.)
I remember one bright and sunny late summer morning in particular. I remember because it was only a few days before the attacks of 9/11. Joe was on his knees repairing a bad patch in the lawn when he came across a large, bright green praying mantis. He lifted it up and brought it over to me to admire. At about this time, my seven-year-old daughter came walking down the street on her way to the Montessori school in Hammond and we showed it to her. She was mesmerized. And I remember the look on Joe’s face when he handed the strange yet harmless insect to her. His eyes were as full of wonder as hers.
May all of the wonderful memories of your husband, your father, your friend and relative, comfort you in the months and years ahead. Joe was one of a kind. I will cherish forever those brief moments we had together every morning on the street corner, idly trading stories, discussing politics—and making memories.

Dear Mary and the entire Falvo family:
We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Falvo's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad and difficult time. However, our wish for you is that for every tear you cry, you will also have a smile for every beautiful memory you recall with your wonderful husband and Dad. He will be sadly missed but please be comforted by knowing that you have been blessed to have him in your lives for so many wonderful years!
