Carolyn S. Steffel, age 56 of Orland Park, IL, formerly of Calumet City, IL and Phoenix, AZ, died Thursday, October 25, 2012 at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville, IL. She was born March 29, 1956 in Hammond, IN. Carolyn was the granddaughter of the late William F. Zick (former Mayor of Calumet City) and Cecelia Zick; daughter of the late Harry Michael Steffel and Florence Zick Steffel of Calumet City; dear sister to Marilyn Steffel and Ronald (Eileen) Steffel; wonderful Aunt to Michael and Lori Steffel; dear niece and cousin to many; and loyal friend to many grade and high school friends known as the "Rat Pack". Carolyn graduated from St. Victor Grade School and Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City. While at St. Victor's and TF North, she was an avid baton twirler and teacher of baton with her mother, Florence Steffel, participating in many parades in Calumet City, Lansing, Hammond, and East Chicago. In 1972, she was selected Miss Calumet City from among nine contestants. Carolyn attended college at Purdue University in Hammond, IN and Loyola University in Chicago, IL. She was employed in Human Resources at Sidley and Austin Law Firm in Chicago, and was later a recruiter in Phoenix, AZ working with Blue Cross Blue Shield as her major account. Carolyn was most recently employed as Senior Recruiter at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL for the past 12 years, where she also initiated the launch of the yearly Career Day for children of Edward employees and children and adults in the community. This yearly event held in the spring was attended by many to better understand and explore the various careers in the field of healthcare. Carolyn was known for her sense of humor and collegiality with her work associates; she was loved by all. A friend recently wrote, "I hope you know how very much you are loved and how you have touched and blessed my life and all of those you've come in contact with. Thanks for the memories and all the laughs". Please send memorials in Carolyn's name to St. Patrick's Residence & Rehabilitation Center, 1400 Brookdale Road, Naperville, IL 60563.
