Maurice I. Anderson, age 86, a lifelong resident of Valparaiso, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the VNA Hospice Center. He was born December 30, 1926 in Valparaiso to Clarence and Bernadine (Osmund) Anderson and graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1945. Maurice retired from Urschel Laboratories as Supervisor of the Tool & Die Department with 45 years of service. Mauri was a skilled pilot who soloed at age 16 and had his pilot's license at age 18. He was the builder of an experimental airplane, the "Knight Twister" and flew it and many other planes. Maurice was also an avid sailor. He built a catamaran which he sailed on Lake Michigan with his family for many years. One of his proud achievements was helping his son-in-law design and build a log home. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ingrid; children: Deborah (Dan) Holthouse of Lake Placid, FL, Susan (Rick) Engles of Crownsville, MD, Julie (Dr. Bernard) Velardo of Charlotte, NC, Carol (Robert) Spaulding of Kouts, IN and Dr. John Ruge of Hinsdale, IL; sister, Irene (Tom) Miller of Schererville; 14 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Beverly (Oscar) Miller and Marian (Jack) Longshore; and brother-in-law, Karl Von Mueller. Maurice will be greatly missed and will be remembered with a visitation on Saturday, January 19, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso, with service beginning at 12:00 noon. Rev. Dr. John J. Santoro officiating.
