BATTALION CHIEF GERHARD J. GAISSER "GG"

After a long illness, it was Saturday, February 2, 2013, in the loving and caring hands of his daughter, Linda and his son, Karl that Gerhard peacefully passed away at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Dyer. He was a lifetime resident of Northwest Indiana, living in Munster and Hammond. Gerhard was a veteran of the US Navy. Upon completion of his duties in the Pacific Theatre, he worked as a millwright at Inland Steel before moving on to his real passion and professional love: The Hammond Fire Department. For 35 years, he rose through the ranks to become Battalion Chief Fire Inspector. Gerhard was also proud of his service as a Lake County Deputy Sheriff. Upon retirement, he stayed active in the department with his work as President of the Retired Hammond Firefighters Local 556, where he stayed in touch with all firefighters, and loved meeting with the gang every month at The Wheel restaurant. He was always there to give a helping hand to all fire fighting causes. He was truly a friend to all, especially those in need of anything. Gerhard was a proud member of the Musicians Guild in Hammond, Knights of Columbus in Hammond, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Roosevelt Club. Most notably, he was the #1 fan of Notre Dame Football. Win or lose, his excitement and spirit never wavered. Gerhard is preceded in death by his parents: Julius and Kathrine(Nee Voelker) Gaisser; and his wife of 62 years, Betty. He leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law and grand daughter, Linda and Richard Bartochowski of Schererville and Desirae Bartochowski of Niles, IL; his son and grandson, Karl and Karl David Gaisser of Schererville, IN; and daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Steve Gustafson of Hammond. And lastly, Gerhard is survived by his two beautiful, beloved kitties: Sammy and Skippy. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church located at 9640 Kennedy Ave, Highland, with Fr. Keith Virus celebrating, burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.
