HERBERT E. POPPE SCHERERVILLE, IN FORMERLY OF HAMMOND
Herbert E. Poppe passed away peacefully Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Community Hospital in Munster, IN. He was born on October 3, 1913 in Lansing, IL the son of Nicholas and Mathilda (Lange) Poppe. Herbert is survived by two children: Virginia (Timothy) Robertson of Sun City West, AZ and Herbert (Cheryl) Poppe of Schererville, IN. Along with his two children, he was blessed with eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 78 years, Marie (Kleine) Poppe; brothers: Robert (Agnes) Duchow, Alwin (Elenore) Poppe, and Walter (Mina) Poppe; and sisters: Dorothy (Ermall) Hollowell and Martha (Carl) Doversberger;. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Herb dearly loved all of his family and had time for all of his family, many friends and acquaintances. Quick to offer guidance, a smile or help where ever it was needed. He was a kind and generous man who impressed many and will be missed by all. Herb and his wife Marie made their home in Hammond, IN for 66 years until 1999 before moving briefly to Dyer and then to Schererville to reside with their son. Herbert was raised in Lansing, IL where in his words "he learned to crawl working in the onion fields" until he was old enough to join the family business at Kenwood Food Shoppe in Hammond, IN. After selling the family business, Herb worked for many years at the Edward C. Minas Co. in Hammond and River Oaks. He was an agonized lifelong Chicago Cubs fan along with cheering on the Bears, Notre Dame, and even the White Sox. A proud American, Herb served his country in the USMCR (1931-1935) and the Navy (1944-1946) in time to make the assault on Okinawa aboard LST 1042. He served for many years and was retired from the Selective Service Board 45 in Hammond, IN. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 and a lifetime member of Marine Corps League, Calumet Detachment. Thanks to all family and friends who knew and loved Dad throughout his many years. "We love and will miss you, but we will always feel your presence in our lives." Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2013.
