Frances Jackovich, 95, passed away peacefully in Charlotte, NC on June 11, 2013. She was born in East Chicago, IN in 1918. She lived there until 2006, moving to the Albertine Retirement Home in Hammond. In 2009, Frances moved to Brookdale Place of South Charlotte in Charlotte, NC. Frances graduated from St. Stanislaus Grade School and St. Joseph High School. Between 1937 and 1951, she worked at St. Catherine Hospital, Albert Given Manufacturing Company and General American, all located in East Chicago. Frances became a homemaker shortly after marrying John on September 13, 1950. When the children were in grade school, she worked a few summer jobs in East Chicago; first as the activity director at Edward Valve Park and then as the Superintendent of the Todd Park Swimming Pool. Both jobs allowed her to be with her children while she worked. Later, she had a full time position as a custodian at St. Joseph's Calumet College in Whiting, retiring in 1989 after 20 years of service. Frances was an active member of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality and the Happy Timers. She enjoyed making pierogis with the other church women for festivals and Lenten fish fry's. Frances was a long term breast cancer survivor. Even as her vision faded due to macular degeneration diagnosed at age 83, Frances did not complain about it. She continued on with her life and kept her sense of humor. Frances received loving, compassionate care from the Albertine Sisters of Albertine Home, the staff and caregivers of Brookdale Place of South Charlotte and especially the caregivers on the Clare Bridge Unit, and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region. Frances was preceded in death by her husband John; sisters: Antoinette and Mary (Sister Mary Elvira); and brother, John. She leaves behind son, Michael (Nancy) Jackovich of Rio Rancho, NM; daughters: Janice (Patrick) Szany of Matthews, NC, Alice (Thomas) Birlson of Centennial, CO, and Cynthia (Patrick) Conley of Ogden Dunes, IN; grandchildren: Julia and Jeffrey Jackovich, Benjamin and Kimberlyn Szany, Keith and Stacey Birlson, and Elizabeth and Rebecca Conley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 15, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Church in East Chicago followed by Committal of Ashes at St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation with the family will take place from 9:00 AM until start of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Frances' name to St. Stanislaus Church - please note the Grade School Fund.
