George W. Fischer, 86 of Whiting passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, August 3, 2013. He was the beloved husband for 65 years of the late Margaret J. “Mitzie” Fischer (nee Wagner) who passed away on November 12, 2012; loving father of Tom Fischer of Whiting and Anita (Bill) Hudson of Davenport, Iowa; cherished “Papa” of Michael, Allison and Erin Niksich and Erika (Sean) List; adoring great “Papa” of Logan, Kayden, Noah, Tucker, Maiya and Stryker; dearest brother of Walter ((Barbara) Fischer of Munster; dear uncle of many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013; 9:30 a.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Whiting with the Rev. Stanley J. Dominik, officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. George Fischer was born on April 7, 1927 in Whiting, IN to Walter and Margaret (Lauer) Fischer and was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Catholic Central (Bishop Noll) High School, Class of 1945 and was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Whiting. George was a WWII US Army Veteran and had served with the Army of the Occupation in Germany. He was a member of the American Legion, Whiting Post 80 (Memorial Service Wednesday at 6:30pm) and the Knights of Columbus Pope John XXIII Council 1696 (prayers Wednesday at 7:30pm). He was a retiree of the Mobil Oil Company with over 25 years of service. George was a great handyman around the house, a real “Mr. Fixit” and loved to travel with his beloved “Mitzie”. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, George will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. (219) 659-4400.
