Shirley Yvonne Schelfo (nee Hegan), age 77, of Crown Point, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013 in her home on Pine Island in Bokeelia, Florida. The home where she enjoyed spending time with her father, traveled to over 27 times and dreamed of retiring. The memory that made the greatest impression on her life was the destruction/clean up after Hurricane Charley in 1994. Shirley is survived by her children: Mike Schelfo, Theresa and son-in-law Terry Duemler, Patricia Holeman, Daniel Schelfo, and Steven Schelfo; grandchildren: Andrew, Yvonne, Jaclyn, David, Marie, Aaron, Mariel, Macie, and Charlotte; one great granddaughter, Audrina; two brothers: Charlie Hegan and John Hegan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, who she married September 4, 1954. Shirley and Joe completed building their Crown Point, IN home together in 1957 and celebrated their 57th Anniversary there. Shirley was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society. She graduated from Indiana University Northwest in 1985 with a degree in accounting, and operated her own accounting and tax service business called, Schelfo Tax Service for 26 years, completing over 5,000 tax returns. Shirley was also the broker of Schelfo Real Estate since 1993. She produced It Me books for children. Shirley was a Godmother to five children and involved in 21 different First Communions, Confirmations, Ad Altare Dei, and Eagle Scout Ceremonies. “My greatest achievement was raising and caring for family”, Shirley always said. Her children and grandchildren love her hugs and spending time with her! Friends may visit with the family on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre (two blocks east of Broadway) at 606 E. 113th Ave/ E. South St., Crown Point, IN from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral prayers will be said on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 9:15 AM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre in Crown Point, IN followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN with Fr. Pat Kalich officiating. Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Crown Point, IN. View directions and/or sign guestbook at or contact 219-663-2500.
