JACK MATEER VALPARAISO, IN Jack Mateer, 83, of Valparaiso formerly of Kalamazoo, MI passed away Friday, September 13, 2013 at home with his family. He was born June 28, 1930 in Kalamazoo to Frank and Louise (Selzer) Mateer, graduated from Western Michigan High School and served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Wisconsin and USS Missouri as a Electricians Mate. Jack also served as a Lieutenant with the Kalamazoo Fire Department retiring in 1969. His second career began as an agent for Standard Oil Co. in Indiana and saw him establish Mateer Oil Company in Valparaiso in 1975 which is still operated by his family. He was a member of American Legion Post # 94, V.F.W. Post #988 and a charter member and past President of Shorewood Forest Lions Club. Jack will be fondly remembered as a skilled card player, particularly Bridge, Pinochle and Cribbage. On June 4, 1955 in Comstock, MI he married Norma J. Taylor who survives along with their children: Jack (Sharon) Mateer of Valparaiso, Paul (Jeri) Mateer of Valparaiso, Teri Mateer of Durham, NC, his sister, Nancy Dorgan of Arizona; five grandchildren: Sasha Mateer, Emily Bolin, Jacob Mateer, Jess Mateer and Becki Mateer; and two great grandchildren: Bryson and Parker Bolin. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Francis (Marjorie) Mateer; and brother-in-law, Jack Dorgan. A funeral service will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 2610 N. Campbell St., Valparaiso with cremation to follow. Visitation Monday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso.
