JUNE MARIE ATKISSON (NEE HANSEN) FORMERLY OF NORTHWEST INDIANA June Marie Atkisson (nee Hansen), age 89, of Plainfield, IN, formerly of Northwest Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013. She was born on September 9, 1924 to Hans and Louise Hansen in Gary, IN. June is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald Atkisson; two daughters: Carol (John) Dirlam of Mooresville, IN and Gail (John) Kroll of Middleton, MA; four grandchildren: Lindsay and Matthew Dirlam, and Samantha and Jessica Kroll; sister-in-law, Kathleen Hansen of Wilmington, NC; three nieces: Beverly (John) Andrews of Kure Beach, NC, Jennifer Hansen of Wilmington, NC, and Susan (Lawrence) McIntosh of Carlsbad, CA; and cousin, June (Gene) Embree of Benton Harbor, MI. Preceded in death by her son, Craig Atkisson; and brother, Robert Hansen. June attended Lew Wallace High School and then Purdue University at West Lafayette where she was affiliated with Pi Beta Phi. In her senior year, June was honored in the ‘Who’s who in American Universities and Colleges’. After college, she was a field director for the Girl Scouts of Genesse County, Flint, MI. Returning to Gary, IN, June became a secretary to the Personnel & Labor Relations Manager at the newly arrived Budd Company. June was a longtime volunteer at the Lake County Convalescent Home where she became the Volunteer Coordinator. She was active in Tri-Kappa Associations, P.E.O. Chapter Y, and Sarah Circle of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In her later years, June resided with her husband, Don, at Sugar Grove Senior Living in Plainfield, IN. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Geisen Funeral and Cremation Services, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN 46410 from 11:30 AM until time of funeral service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Lawrence Gember officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Library at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Merrillville, IN or to the Indiana State Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis.
