MARTHA MAE SOMMERS NORTH MANCHESTER, IN Martha Mae Sommers, 84, of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN died Friday, May 2, 2014 at Timbercrest Healthcare. She was born May 21, 1929 in Louisville, OH to LeRoy and Irene (Royer) Domer. Martha was a 1947 graduate of Louisville High School, received her B.S. in Education from Manchester College in 1960, and her Masters in Education from Purdue University in 1966. She married Owen J. Sommers on February 21, 1948 in Louisville. She taught Life Skills in public schools, retiring after 29 years. After retirement, Martha was instrumental in starting a day care at the Kouts, IN Presbyterian Church, and served as Chairperson of the Day Care Board for 10 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kouts. Martha enjoyed family, friends, reading, and traveling. She visited all 50 states and every continent but Antartica. Martha and her husband spent several months in Arizona each winter. She lived at Timbercrest Retirement Community since March 19, 2008, coming from Valparaiso, Indiana where she had lived over 40 years. Martha is survived by her husband, Owen J. Sommers of North Manchester; three children: Alan (Karen) Sommers of Chesterton, IN, Gail Dedrick of Schererville, IN, and Mark (Anne) Sommers of Tucson, AZ; five grandchildren: Stephanie (Gene) Stout of Phoenix, AZ, Steven Dedrick of Boulder, CO, Brian (Amanda) Dedrick of Chesterton, IN Mike Sommers of Indianapolis, IN, and Mathew Sommers of Scotland; six great grandchildren; and her brother, Marion (Julie) Domer of Louisville. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, with Pastor Kay Gaier officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. There will be a second memorial service at 2:00 PM Monday, May 26, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kouts, IN with Rev. Ed Fabrici officiating. Family receive friends one hour prior to that service. Preferred memorial is (MDA) - ALS Research Division, 2869 E. Dupont Road, Ft. Wayne, IN 46825.
