CURTIS LUTHER WATTERS "MR. GREEN" HOBART, IN
Curtis Luther Watters, age 92, of Hobart, passed away suddenly and peacefully on April 16, 2016. Always a man of strong faith, he passed after briefly praying for God to take him home and while holding the hand of his oldest son, Curtis. He retired as an Indiana Bell Supervisor with over 35 years of service. Curtis also started and was owner of the John Deere Agricultural Dealership in LaPorte, IN until he sold it in 1979. He was a World War II Army veteran who proudly served his country. Curtis was a former Sunday School Superintendant and Elder at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart. When first married, he and his first wife, Betty Jean, leased a school bus to ensure that every child that wanted to attend Sunday School had a ride. In 1994, he co-founded Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hobart. For three straight years, using his old John Deere Model 70 tractor, he spent his days clearing the land of trees and brush where the church would be erected, with the first service there held in 2000. Curtis was also an active supporter of various Lutheran charities. Shortly after he retired from Indiana Bell, Curtis starting walking five miles a day through Hobart, and continued until he was 85 years old, wearing his John Deere green attire and was affectionately known as "Mr. Green". Curtis also loved to fish and went on annual family fishing trips in Canada. He always said "you don't celebrate your birthday until your actual birthday" and ironically we will be celebrating his birthday on the same day as we celebrate his homecoming. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Betty Jean Watters and his second wife, Lorraine Watters; sister, Lorraine "Auntie Wayne" and half sister, "Auntie Dep". Curtis is survived by his children: Curtis (Cathy) Durward Watters of Pittsburgh, PA, Robin (William, Jr.) Kammerer of Pittsburgh, PA, David Watters, of Seattle WA, Wendy Watters of Tiburon, CA; grandchildren: Lindsay (Charles) Moore, Adrian Kammerer, William (Sarah) Kammerer III, Kari Watters and Kristin (Adam) Smith; great grandchildren: Madeline, Amelia, Helen, Logan and Kaden; half brother, Robert Berndt.
