EDWARD EVANS Obituary

EVANS--Edward P., died peacefully on December 31, 2010. Ned was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 31, 1942 to Thomas Mellon Evans and Elizabeth Park Evans Kase. He is survived by two brothers Thomas M. Evans, Jr. and Robert S. Evans, his niece, Ashley Evans and his nephews Jonathan Evans, Thomas M. Evans, III and Mark Johnson Evans. Ned graduated from Yale University in 1964 and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1967. He had a long and successful business career beginning in 1968, holding executive positions with a number of family businesses. In 1980, Ned became Chairman and CEO of MacMillian, Inc. Beginning in 1988, he became involved with personal business interests and investments including breeding and racing thoroughbred horses. Ned was also known as a generous philanthropist. He formed the Edward P. Evans Foundation and contributed to a number of charitable organizations in various fields throughout the United States. Most recently, he made a gift to the Yale School of Management that will allow Yale to begin the construction of the new unified campus and building for the Yale School of Management. The building will be known as Edward P. Evans Hall. Mr. Evans' greatest joy was racing thoroughbred horses and breeding thoroughbreds at his farm in Casanova, Virginia known as Spring Hill Farm. He bred over 100 stakes winners and as of his death was the 4th leading breeder and 7th leading owner in North America. Ned was consistently named as one of the Top 10 breeders in North America. His horse Quality Road was one of the favorites for the 2009 Kentucky Derby and won or placed in 12 out of 13 starts. Quality Road was injured before the 2009 Derby and was unable to compete in any of the Triple Crown races in that year. The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association named Ned the Virginia Breeder of the Year nine times, most recently in 2009, and the National Breeder of the Year in 2009. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation, 100 Park Avenue, Suite 108, Rockville, MD 20850.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Evans, but was well aware of the contributions he made to thoroughbred racing. I have followed his horses for many years and was terribly saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.
