CHUN-JO LIU Obituary

LIU--Chun-Jo, Chun-Jo Liu, 90, Professor Emerita, East Asian Languages and Literature, University of Minnesota, died on September 24 in Minneapolis. She was born in Beijing and was the daughter of Liu Liang-Xun (Ti-Yi), of Jiangxi, and Huang Qing-Xian, of Hunan. She attended St. Mary's Hall, Shanghai, St. Paul School, Hong Kong, and Nankai Secondary School, Chongqing, and received her B.A. from National Southwest Associated University (Tsinghua University), her M.A. from Occidental College, and her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota in 1963, she taught at the University of Wisconsin, Brooklyn College, Vassar College, the University of Florida, Lasell College, Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of British Columbia. She was a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, and at the Beijing Foreign Language Institute, and taught Chinese in summer language programs at Middlebury College and Indiana University. She authored and edited several books and contributed to a variety of academic and other publications. She was instrumental in the creation and continuing success of the China Center, enabling U.S.-China scholarly exchanges, and the East Asian Languages and Literature Library, both at the University of Minnesota. A passionate teacher, mentor and scholar, even after retirement at age 70, she stayed in contact with many former students and colleagues and active through colloquia and otherwise. She served on various advisory boards, was an active member of her church, and pursued her great love of music by playing piano and cello, in a musical trio, and singing in the St. Mark's Cathedral Choir, until her death. She is survived by her sisters Faye Chun-Hwei Liu Chang and Chun-Chuan Liu Wang (James), her brothers Chun-Mai Liu (Youkang) and Ted Chun-Peng Liu (Rebecca), eight nieces and nephews and seven grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Liu Chun-Sue, Professor Emerita, Mathematics, Beijing University. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 12 at 1pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, 519 Oak Grove St., Minneapolis, MN 55403.
