LEWIS--Anthony. The Officers of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences acknowledge with sadness the passing of distinguished journalist, columnist, author and Academy Fellow Anthony Lewis. A courageous voice for individual rights and freedom of the press, he won two Pulitzer Prizes for national reporting, including his transformative work for the New York Times in making the proceedings of the U.S. Supreme Court more understandable to the public. President Bill Clinton honored him with the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001. We extend our condolences to his wife, the Honorable Margaret H. Marshall, and to his children and grandchildren. He was a neighbor of mine, or I was a neighbor of his; used to see him at Darwin's once in a while. I was going to introduce myself and say hello, but now it is too late. The lesson is what can be done today should not be left for tomorrow. My sincere condolence to the family.

Chief Justice Marshall. Although we did not know Mr. Lewis, we did know you through our time together at The Armenian Nursing Home. You, Chief Justice, were always so kind to my husband, "Bobby" and my family and always took time out of your busy schedule to stop and "talk" to him while visiting your mother. Our deepest sympathy to you and your entire family on your loss.

My father was an old colleague of Tony's in Washington and New York in the 1950s. When Dad died in 2011, Tony sent a kind handwritten message which was passed around the family. Let me now return the kindness on behalf of the family. One of my memorable summers was spent as a copy boy in the Sunday Department of the New York Times, and one of my jobs was to read Tony his copy as it came back from the composing room on Saturday afternoon. I was an extravagant admirer of his coverage of the great Supreme Court decisions of the 1960s. I hope that he and Joe Nolan are now hashing over old times and skewering the nitwits of the world...

Chief Justice Marshall --
There are some losses that are so very hard to accept and Mr. Lewis' is one of them. He and his work on civil rights and race relations served as guide-posts for an entire generation. It is fitting that you were a couple, as your work on civil rights for the gay community has paved the way for a future generation.
May The Lord hold both of you, gently, in the palm of his hand

...Soon after I married Ambassador Kenneth Franzheim II in 1974, we met Tony at a Washington briefing. I knew my husband expected me to "circulate" however speaking with Tony was riveting to say the least. Tony and I became pen-pals.
...Tony was pure synergy-in-action on many levels and his voice was compelling.
...THANK-GOD Tony was in my world!

In 2007 the Massachusetts Bar Foundation honored the life and work of Anthony Lewis by presenting him with the Foundation's "Great Friend of Justice" award. The name of the award aptly describes the way Anthony Lewis lived his life. He will be missed not only by his devoted wife, Chief Justice Marshall, and his entire family, but by all who cherish justice and the rule of law.

When I was in junior high and high school, Anthony Lewis was one of the columnists we were taught to read (by social studies and history teachers whom I still remember and respect greatly) -- as an example of fine writing, great liberal principles and conscience, on issues that really mattered. Loved that little photo of him next to his NY Times column -- made him seem like a friend and mentor to us as we read. Sending you warm sympathies for your loss, and thanks.

Anthony Lewis came to Cleveland in 2000, to Tiferith Israel, as Scholar in Residence. He spoke as he wrote, with clarity and a pure belief in progressive principles. I am deeply saddened by his loss to the world of letters and thought.

I practiced law for 30 years and mentored students at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law for almost 20 years. Whenever a student successfully completed the first year of law school, I would give her Gideon's Trumpet. In clear and lucid prose that anyone could understand, Anthony Lewis explained the arcane procedures of the U.S. Supreme Court and abstract legal concepts such as "selective incorporation". But most importantly, he told an inspiring story of how a barely literate drifter persuaded the Supreme Court to change its mind and extend the Sixth Amendment's right to counsel to the States -- with the assistance of appointed appellate counsel, Abe Fortas, and his colleagues, of course. The book exemplifies how creative and noble the legal profession can be. I once wrote to him about giving his book to my mentees, and he sent me a brief but gracious response. Years later, I met him before a lecture he was giving at Case, and he autographed my copies of "Gideon's Trumpet" and "Make No Law". He was a great writer and a true gentleman. It is fitting, if not, ironic, that Lewis died as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright.
