DAVID E. LAVIN

LAVIN--David E. We are saddened by the death of David E. Lavin, who died on March 14th from Lymphoma. He led a wonderful life and enjoyed politics, music, sports, traveling the world and spending time with his family at his home in Bridgehampton, his favorite place. David graduated from Scarsdale High School, attended Colby College and received his M.A. and Ph.D in Sociology at New York University. He began his career as a research fellow in social relations at Harvard University. He taught at University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University before joining the faculty at City University of New York's Graduate Center and Lehman College. As a sociologist, his work focused on studying higher education's effect on increasing opportunities for the underprivileged. He authored numerous books and articles. In 2009, he and his colleague, Paul Attewell, received both the prestigious Grawemeyer Award as well as an Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational Research Association for "Passing The Torch: Does Higher Education for the Disadvantaged Pay Off Across the Generations?". His interesting mind, sense of humor, and love will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by daughters, Nina, Jenny and Samantha, sons-in-law, Taylor and Mark, grandchildren, Tia, Ava, Harry and Gray, ex-wife, Marguerite Lavin and partner, Barbara Heyns. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Friday, March 22nd at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street. A reception will follow.
