WHITEHEAD--E. Douglas Age 73, of New York. Formerly of Yorkshire, England. Born in Galashiels, Scotland, died on April 23, 2013. It is with sadness that we note the passing of this devoted husband to his former wives, Patricia A Robbins and Batya Kahane, partner in life - Mary Goldman, and loving and proud father of his daughter, Robin. He is survived by his daughter, two brothers, two grandchildren, two nieces, three nephews, three cousins, his former wives and his life partner, Mary Goldman. , and Indiana University
School of Medicine; served his Internship in Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, one year Surgical Residency at Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, and his Urology Residency at New York University
Medical Center, New York. He spent three months in London, England studying urological surgery and received a Certificate of Post-Graduate Urological Instruction from the Institute of Urology, University of London. Dr. Whitehead served as a Captain in the USAF (Medical Corps) including one year in Vietnam. In 1973 Dr. Whitehead entered the private practice of Urology in New York. During the last 10 years of his practice he was a mentor to several post baccalaureate students desirous of entering medical school. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Urology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York and later at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. He was Board Certified in Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Sexual Medicine Society of North America. Dr. Whitehead was on the Attending Staff of Beth Israel Medical Center, New York for 36 years and on the Attending Staff of New York Downtown Hospital, New York. He presented Grand Rounds on Penile Enlargement Surgery at Plastic Surgical Grand Rounds, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, New York; Urological Grand Rounds, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York; and Surgical Grand Rounds, New York Downtown Hospital, New York. Dr. Whitehead belonged to and contributed to many professional organizations and societies including the: American Cancer Society, American College of Surgeons, American Urological Association, International Society of Artificial Organs, American Fertility Society, AASECT, SSSS, SIECUS, AMA, Sexual Medicine Society of North America, International Society for Sexual Medicine, Societe Internationale d'Urologe, New York Academy of Medicine, New York Academy of Science, American Academy of Phalloplasty Surgeons, Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, and Sexual Medicine Society of North America. He served on: medical and editorial advisory boards, as a reviewer and referee for several medical journals, and participated in national and international workshops and symposia. He was a member of the Medical Board of Beth Israel Hospital, New York, Founder of MEDCALLS and Director of the Association for Male Sexual Dysfunction, Continence Restored, ClassicCare, Geri-Care; Association for Urinary Continence Control, the Prostate Health Program of New York and the American Academy of Phalloplasty Surgeons. He also was President of the American Academy of Phalloplasty Surgeons. Dr. Whitehead was an investigator of several drugs and was an investigator of the research study, "Efficacy and Safety of Penile Lengthening and Widening Techniques" at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York. Together with Drs. A. A. Ehrhardt and H. F. L. Meyer-Bahlburg he was a co-investigator of a grant funded study on "Long-Term Mental Health Effects of Prenatal DES Exposure." He was a consultant to industry. He was a member of the Consensus Conference on Penile Augmentation at the European Society for Male Genital-Surgery in Italy. In 1990 he was Visiting Professor at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India and performed live surgery of the first penile prosthesis insertion in Southern India and in 1991 performed the Whitehead Technique of Penile Widening with Allograft Dermal Matrix Graft in Rome, Italy. Dr. Whitehead gave more than 300 lectures, panel discussions, grand rounds, presentations, post-graduate courses, symposia and videos. He was invited to speak at many professional and lay organizations. He also has over 100 publications of articles in medical journals and book chapters for professionals and the lay public. He was quoted in numerous books, magazines and newspapers, and interviewed for TV and the Internet.His first text book: "Current Operative Urology" was published in 1975 and a second edition, with Dr. Elliot Leiter, was published in 1984. This was followed for several years by an Annual Edition. He edited: "Atlas of Surgical Techniques in Urology," published in 1998. With Dr. Harris M. Nagler he co-edited: "Management of Impotence and Infertility", published in 1994. Starting in 1985 with Dr. Shirley Zussman he produced a TV series titled: "Conversations on Male Sexuality". In 1999 he wrote the book titled: "Viagra-- the Wonder Drug for Peak Performance," and along with Dr. Zussman edited a Newsletter titled: "Sex over 40". He has two patents for penile prosthetic devices. Throughout his professional career he has been a leader in Erectile Dysfunction and Aesthetic and Reconstructive Genital Surgery. He was a pioneer in the field of pericavernosal allograft dermal matrix grafting for glandular enhancement and primary, secondary and revisionary aesthetic penile girth enhancement. From 1987-1989 with his wife Patricia he was Co-Chair of Clark University Parents Association. Several years ago he donated an excellent collection of old urological instruments and books, dated to the 1700's, to The William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History. He was a supporter of the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center at Massachusetts General Hospital (Norbert J. Liebsch, M.D., PhD) and Hadassah. He was an avid glider pilot and held Diamond Badge #601 and a Nevada State speed record. In addition, he was a power pilot. He introduced The Tilley Hat to the gliding community. He will be particularly missed by his grandchildren, Harrison and Samantha, whom he loved to teach and to whom he loved to tell silly stories and magical incantations.
