KOCH--Edward I. The City University of New York mourns the passing of Mayor Edward I. Koch, who also served as a Congressman and City Councilman during a long and distinguished career in public service. Mayor Koch led our city through some of its most challenging and tumultuous years with a combination of energy, spirit and optimism that was refreshingly contagious. In three terms as Mayor he brought New York City from the brink of bankruptcy to growth and prosperity, and initiated a housing program that resulted in the construction and renovation of more than 200,000 housing units in formerly distressed neighborhoods, one of his most lasting legacies. An alumnus of The City College/ CUNY, he was a strong supporter of quality public higher education and of The City University. On behalf of CUNY's faculty, students, staff and alumni we wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Benno Schmidt, Chairperson Matthew Goldstein, Chancellor
