Not a week goes by that I don't mention Frank, either in conversation or in writing. Frank Rooney was my mentor and a great business guru, always showing grace, friendliness and honesty. He is greatly missed and surely is blessed by the Lord.

I was President of Cove Shoe, a division of H.H. Brown, during the 90's. Mr. Rooney was always a role model of a corporate executive. I was employed by his father-in-law when HHB was privately owned. Mr. Rooney was an example of what all managers desire to emulate.

I for one have not forgotten Frank. Life is filled with distractions, and right now we are faced with a big distraction, but that doesn't mean we have forgotten. When I face life's challenges, I often ask myself what Frank would have done in this situation and often the problems fade away.

Itwas a privilege and honro to have worked for Frank at Melville.

Frank was the best kind of man you could be. He took us into his nantucketfamily, as we were friends of his son Steve . Every summer we got the coveted invitation to dinner at Shimmo. He always knew our three girls names, even though he had dozens of grandchildren's names to remember. I was privileged to have the seat beside him at the dining table, and was always sure to bring him his favorite, my Mile High Peach Pie! He even had his own pie plate for it! I will now give tat pie plate to his grandson Stephen and his future wife. Nantucket summers were made so special for us by frank and Frannie. He was one in a million and we were truly blessed to have known him.

I wrote about Frank and Melville in my autobiography ("The Crazy Life of a Kid From Brooklyn"). They imbued an ethical culture in those that worked for Frank and Melville. Today's executive could learn much from this fine gentleman.

Frankly I am greatly surprised that more had not responded to this. Because of Frank's low key (but solid ethical nature), not enough people have recognized what a great business person that he was.

Frank Rooney was the most spontaneously generous and caring man I have ever been gifted with knowing. In the late summer of 1995, at the suggestion of Brother Tom Murphy, then President of All Hallows High School, together with Bob Fahey, he visited our little storefront school in Hunts Point of the South Bronx. The three had met at a dinner in support of the Inner-city Schol-arship Fund, which Frank had co-founded, during which time Frank had expressed his preference for aiding children at a younger level of education, such as Saint Ignatius School, which was just beginning. He looked over the 14 boys, still without desks, met the four young teachers, all graduates of Fordham University, the rather craftily designed 880 sq. feet of space, and asked what the school's greatest need was. I told him of a highly experienced young woman who was willing to teach with us, but would not be able to survive on the barely living stipends the younger grads were receiving.
Frank sat down at once and wrote out a check for the full amount that was needed.
He soon after agreed to be a member of the school's first board, though he questioned whether he had the qualifications to take on such a task. I assured him that he would do, and he served two terms on the Saint Ignatius Board, never missing a meeting. This school, based on the "Nativity School" model, provides high school scholarships for its graduates, for which Frank arranged a yearly investment through the Inner-city fund. A "Nativity School" also runs a summer camp for its students, continuing
their education,socialization and spiritual
development. Board members questioned whether we could afford to keep this aspect of the program, since there were outstand-ing mortgage payments that were owed.
Several days later, Frank inquired of me how much we still owed; I told him. The next day the school received 1000 shares of a stock that paid off the entire debt. Such love convinces one that certain projects are of God, through the great caring human beings like Frank Rooney. Saint Ignatius School now has a new building and teaches 80 students, girls as well as boys from the Hunts Point area. They remember him and his family every day, as I do, in their prayers and study.

I met mr. Rooney 4 years ago on my first day on the job as a brand new sales rep for Born Shoes representing the NW states for indys. I was visiting New York for the first time in my life and needless to say I was pretty nervous to be jumping in the deep end head first. I was in the Connnecticut office trying to take everything in and wrap my head around the hussle and demands of my new job when Mr. Rooney walked in and completely lit up the room and changed the entire mood. He looked right at me and asked me to go get a particular sandal that was selling well. When I brought him the sandal, he asked everyone WHY this simple sandal, the Dolly from Spring 2011, was doing so well. The answer emerged that it was becasue it was simple, beautiful, and took care of peoples' basic need for comfort. Then, as if he already knew the answer to the question he had asked, he bestowed some incredible wisdom on us and told us that if we simply take care of people, the rest will fall into place. Right then and there he reminded me of the same great man that was my father who had passed a couple of years prior. A man that was known all over our community for his unwavering kindness willingness to take care of everyone. I knew in that moment that this was exactly where I was supposed to be, and where I plan to be for the rest of my career.
Thank you for being an inspiration and reminding everyone what's really important in life.
With love, Julia McComas, Seattle WA, Born Shoes/HH Brown.

My deep sympathies to the family of my good friend; Francis (Frank) Rooney who was not only one of my mentors but was quietly one of the great business executives that this country has ever seen. He was CEO for 20 years of the Melville Corp and brought it from a volume of $180 million to $7 Billion. Along with Thom McAn Rooney added on such names as Footaction, CVS, Marshall's, Linen & things and many others. After Frank retired Warren Buffet brought Frank in to help build up his father in laws company which Warren had purchased.
I joined Thom McAn shoes on a training program after the army and was immediately sent to training with Peter Drucker. In my book (Then Crazy Life of a Kid from Brooklyn) I write about my experiences and how Frank Rooney always held and maintains the very highest standards of ethics and excellence.

I want to extend my condolences to Frances, and to his children - as well as members of the extended Rooney "clan" - on the passing of Francis Rooney.
I recall hearing about his talented stewardship of Melville Corp. from our father, Frank, when we were growing up.
From what I've read in the NYT today, he was a marvelous person, as well as businessman.
My sympathies to you all.
Sincerely,
Greg Melville

I only knew Frank Rooney through my father, Ken Berland, who worked with him at Melville for over 30 years. Theirs was a rare partnership in its longevity and mutual admiration and respect. I am so glad I got to speak with Frank a few times since my father's passing this past July. He said some wonderful things about my dad and I know that one of the highlights of his life was working with Frank. My husband, Mike, myself, and my mother, Gloria Berland all extend our deepest sympathies to Franny and the entire family. Frank was a rare human being filled with compassion and kindness who will be remembered with affection by those who were fortunate to have known him.

Frank Rooney was a great man - father, husband, (great)grandfather, entrepreneur, philanthropist, sportsman, and I'm sure many more adjectives that can be added here for those who knew him better. But most of all, I will be remembering Mr. Rooney as a welcoming and generous host to a far-from-home college girl on some holidays & weekends that I spent with the Rooney's during my BC years, and later on Nantucket (while always sporting that infectious grin!
Heaven has just welcomed one of the Greats, but I'm so sorry it will be a gaping loss here on earth.
Love to you, Clare, and all of your family. What a legacy your dad has left.
