GARDE--Harriet Merritt Dixon, died peacefully in her home in Greenwich, CT at the age of 83. She was born in Loudonville, NY and raised in Hewlett, LI. She graduated from Miss Porter's School '47 and Columbia Teachers College, becoming a teacher at the Spence School in NYC and Lawrence School in Hewlett. She lived in Lawrence, then Locust Valley, NY. A dedicated and gifted athlete all her life, she played for the Long Island Women's Field Hockey Association. She excelled in club sports, particularly in squash doubles and golf. At the Rockaway Hunt Club she was a ten time women's golf champion. She was a long standing member of the Women's Long Island Golf Association where she served as Membership Chair, as well as being a lifelong member of the Metropolitan Women's Golf Association. She was predeceased by her first husband of 24 years, Lawrence Howland Dixon, a NYC commodities broker with Farr Man. She was also predeceased by her second husband, John F. Garde Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Wendy Dixon Fog of New Canaan, Ct and Meredith Dixon Finan of Greenwich and New Jersey, and her grandchildren Merritt and Courtney Fog and Austin, Peter and Hallie Finan. Services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY in early May. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Visiting Nurse Association of Long Island in Garden City, NY or The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
