HOWARD GODWIN

GODWIN-- Howard Gibson, Jr. Howard Gibson Godwin, Jr., a respected partner of Sidley Austin LLP and a highly valued leader of the firm's securities practice, passed away on April 1 at his home in Tarrytown, NY. He was 67. Mr. Godwin joined the firm, then named Brown & Wood, in 1969 after graduating from Duke University Law School. He became a partner in 1978 and served as senior counsel from 2011 until his untimely passing. Mr. Godwin specialized in the representation of issuers and underwriters of securities, with an emphasis on transactions involving companies in the energy and real estate industries, particularly real estate investment trusts. Mr. Godwin is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mimi McDonough Godwin, children Elizabeth Godwin and Anne Godwin Cauthren, his son-in-law, Benjamin Cauthren, and his sister, Virginia Anne Godwin Carboy. He was predeceased by his son, William Godwin. He was warmly regarded at Sidley for his gentlemanly demeanor and genial personality, and greatly admired for his dedication and talent. Mr. Godwin shared freely his impressive knowledge of the law with both clients and colleagues. Our firm and the many lawyers he helped to train have greatly benefited from the example he set. We will miss his friendship, integrity and humanity, and we extend our condolences to his family. With deepest sympathies, his colleagues at Sidley Austin LLP.
