LEONARD LEBENSON

LEBENSON--Leonard. Leonard Lebenson, 96, passed away on February 12, 2013. Len, a distinguished WWII veteran and Master Sergeant, served the 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters as its Operations (G-3) Sergeant. He actively participated in six campaigns: Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. On D-Day, pre-dawn, Len emerged from a crash-landed glider to participate in the liberation of Ste.-Mere-Eglise. Len, pictured above with Gen. James Gavin, earned two bronze stars, became a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, and was awarded the Belgium Croix de Guerre. He authored Surrounded by Heroes, an account of his wartime experience. Len is survived by Alice, his wife of 70 years.
