MARI B. HAAS

HAAS--Mari Beth, EdD lost her battle with early onset Alzheimer's Disease on April 17, 2013 at age 60. Born on August 19, 1952 to Carolyn Buhai Haas and Robert G. Haas (deceased) in Chicago Ill. Survived by her loving children Alexis Haas Rubin (Evan Woolley) and Zachary Rubin and husband, Mark Gelber. Mari had four siblings, Andy Haas (deceased), Betsy Haas-Beckert, Thomas Haas, and Karen Haas-Foletta and is survived by a large network of nieces, nephews, aunts (Sandra Barz) and uncles, friends and colleagues. Mari is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, earned a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Northern Colorado, and a Doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in language methods. In her career as an educator she inspired language teachers around the world to make learning come alive for students by incorporating folk art and the rich stories of Latin American cultures into the classroom. Mari loved the beach, skiing, music, traveling, creative craft projects and being with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given in Mari's name to UCSF Foundation Memory and Aging Fund where she was diagnosed, or to Echoing Good. The service will take place at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, New York, NY 10023 on Sunday April 21, 2013 at 2:00pm.
