TALLCHIEF--Maria. The George Balanchine Foundation notes with sadness the passing of Maria Tallchief, one of the great ballerinas of the twentieth century. It is well known that Mr. B created many roles for her during her brilliant and groundbreaking performing career. Thanks to her enthusiasm for our Interpreters Archive video project, starting in 1995 we were privileged to tape her coaching some of the greatest of these roles -- those in Firebird, Orpheus, The Nutcracker, Allegro Brillante, Scotch Symphony, and others -- passing on a lifetime's worth of artistry to the dancers of today and adding another dimension to her remarkable legacy. Ave atque vale.
